Papa & Barkley is incredibly excited to transition into this new era where plant-based medicine is truly legalized in California. It’s an important shift as new regulations improve accessibility and ensure quality across the state. As statewide access and distribution increases, it’s important that the industry’s standards also continue to improve.
In truth, we established a number of internal best practices prior to the adult-use regulations going into effect.
From the start, we set out to closely control our processes from flower to finished product by building our manufacturing facility in the heart of Humboldt, where we can source fresh, premium sun-grown cannabis. We know that great finished products begin with great flower inputs.
During our manufacturing process we triple-test our products — starting with the raw flower — for mold, pesticides, metals and other contaminants. When flowers do not meet our purity standards, batches are tossed. We learned that we also need to test the essentials oil inputs from our providers. For many of our topical formulations we add eucalyptus, lavender, tea tree and peppermint for increased efficacy. For us, testing just one ingredient in the recipe is not enough; you have to test all of them.
Once our flowers and oil inputs are approved, we combine the ingredients and test our infusions. These infusions are the base from which our products are made and include a combination of coconut or MCT oil, cannabis oil, and depending on the product, essential oils. Only after we get positive results from the infused batch, do we create the finished goods, and do a final test. At this stage we still watch for molds and pesticides, but we predominantly test for consistency of cannabinoids and terpenes. When we say our products have a 3:1 THC:CBD ratio, we want to make sure the ratio is precise. We also want to make sure we understand and share with our customers what cannabinoids and terpenes are in that batch.
While research is still emerging, the latest into medical cannabis suggests that specific ratios of THC and CBD, in combination with other cannabinoids, creates more effective medicine than distilled versions of either cannabinoid. And since our extraction methods — using a little heat, pressure, and a whole lot of love — maintain the full profile of cannabinoids, terpenes and phytonutrients, you can rest assured you are getting the very best from the plant.
We will continue to go above and beyond state requirements and always work towards improving or products and processes. We tirelessly do this because it’s part of staying true to our caregiving mission: to unlock the potential of the plant to improve people’s lives.
